LEVER LOCKS

For door handle requirements, the ADA says that parts shall be operable with one hand and shall not require tight grasping, pinching, or twisting of the wrist. In general terms, lever locks are ADA-compliant, and knobs are not. ADA compliance focuses on threshold height and thickness because improper use can bar a person from using a mobility aid (e.g., wheelchair) to enter or exit an area. A traditional threshold runs across the bottom of an entry door opening to cover seams and provide a seal underneath the door to protect the building from drafts. A low threshold offers the same function and is designed lower to the ground to comply with ADA requirements.
